In Brief

Cloud Migration of SPIEGEL-Gruppe

Before the end of Atlassian’s Server products in February 2024, SPIEGEL-Gruppe faced the challenge of migrating their existing Atlassian systems to the cloud.

Together we successfully migrated 500 Jira and 800 Confluence users to the cloud. Through an extensive clean-up phase, a test migration and a trusting collaboration, we were able to address all concerns about the cloud.

Facts (as of 2021):

  • Industry: Media
  • Headquarters: Hamburg
  • Employees: approx. 1,300
  • Revenue: €274.9 million

Products in use:

  • Jira
  • Confluence
  • Jira Service Management

The bigger overall package

- in the Atlassian Cloud

Above all, the reduced system administration burden was a strong argument for migrating to the Atlassian Cloud. After moving Jira, Jira Service Management and Confluence to the cloud, the teams can now fully focus on their core tasks and effectively support editorial processes.

How the cloud migration went

Consulting and analysis

At a comprehensive overview training session at the end of 2019, we convinced SPIEGEL-Gruppe with our competent and trusting communication. At that time, the group was evaluating the Data Center and Cloud options and was in discussion with various partners. Ultimately, we won the group’s trust with our comprehensive cloud expertise and a tailored migration plan.

Detailed migration planning

We created a plan for the cloud migration that included a detailed analysis of the apps to be migrated. Jira, Jira Service Management and Confluence were to be moved to the cloud.

The cloud migration

From the decision to migrate to the completion of the project, about a year elapsed. Before the actual migration started, we conducted several cloud admin training sessions so the SPIEGEL team could optimally prepare for the new cloud environment. Since standardized migration paths were not yet available for all products at the time, we developed a tailored solution that began with an extensive clean-up phase. Because: the cleaner the data, the faster and smoother the migration.

Extended features, fewer concerns

Since September 2022, SPIEGEL-Gruppe has been successfully using the cloud. “I’m now a fan of the cloud,” reports IT Project Manager Thorben Petersen, confirming that his team members share this positive experience. Of course it took some time to get used to the modern design and new features, but the benefits quickly became apparent. The unexpectedly low volume of IT requests from colleagues showed how intuitively the Atlassian Cloud was adopted.

The initial data protection concerns were confidently resolved through our partnership-based collaboration. Thanks to the cloud migration, SPIEGEL-Gruppe can now invest more IT resources in internal processes.

Impact that can be measured

With the end of the Server product line and the increasing burden of system administration, SPIEGEL-Gruppe chose a sustainable solution with the Atlassian Cloud platform.
